Experience:

This experience details the selection process for a Technology Intern at American Express, which included an Online Assessment followed by two interview rounds.

Round 1: Online Assessment (Coding Test)

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes. Conducted on the Codility platform, it consisted of three coding questions with no negative marking. One problem was from graphs, one from priority queues, and the third was a basic easy problem. The candidate managed to solve all three, though not always optimally, getting correct outputs for visible test cases (Amex tests often have hidden test cases).

Tips from the candidate: Be good at pace, submit confidently, take care of constraints, read problems properly, and don't get stuck on one problem.

Seven students were shortlisted for interviews the next day.

Round 2: Technical Interview

The interviewer started with an introduction and then moved to projects, asking about their working and even requesting a demonstration. The interviewer also posed scenarios for which the candidate had to suggest solutions.

  • Coding Question: "Given an array of integers, write a program to reverse the elements of an array." The candidate coded the solution on screen, explaining the approach, time, and space complexities.
  • Core Basics: Questions on core computer science subjects.
  • Behavioral: "Why do I want to join Amex?"

Round 3: Tech + HR Interview

This round started with introductions. Based on the candidate's introduction, the interviewer asked, "What type of positive impact I want to create on society?"

  • Projects: The candidate was asked to choose one project and explain all the steps involved in its creation.
  • Collaboration & Git/GitHub: Questions on how the candidate collaborated with teammates (replying with GitHub), leading to questions about GitHub and Git.
  • Software Development: "What do you understand by software development?"
  • Company Knowledge: "Why do you want to join Amex?" and questions about how Amex generates revenue and its working models.

Tips from the candidate: Strengthen DSA, prepare core subjects (DBMS, OOPs, OS, Networking), solve puzzles, make at least one good project, be thorough with resume content, and interact well with the interviewer.
