I applied for the Software Engineer Intern opportunity at Walmart Global Tech through the off-campus process. The process started with an online assessment containing a combination of coding and technical questions. The coding section mainly focused on DSA. I got questions involving arrays, strings, and basic data structures. The questions weren't extremely difficult, but the time constraint made the assessment a little tricky. I was able to perform reasonably well in the assessment and eventually received the interview shortlist. The first technical round lasted around 45–60 minutes. The interviewer started with a brief introduction and then moved directly into problem solving. I was given an array-based problem and was first asked to explain the brute-force approach. After that, I had to optimize it and discuss the time and space complexity. The interviewer then moved to a tree-based question. I explained the recursive approach, worked through a few examples, and then implemented the solution. There were several follow-up questions around edge cases and how the solution would change if the constraints were modified. There was also a short discussion about my projects. I was asked about my individual contribution, the technologies I had used, and some of the technical decisions behind the projects. A few basic OOP and DBMS questions were also discussed. I qualified for the second technical round. This round was somewhat more challenging because the problems were less direct. I received a graph-based question and initially went in the wrong direction. After discussing the constraints and examples with the interviewer, I realized that my first approach wouldn't work efficiently. I eventually came up with a better approach and explained the idea, but I wasn't able to complete the implementation cleanly within the remaining time. The interviewer also asked a few questions related to databases and object-oriented programming before the round ended. After completing the interview process, I waited for the final update. Eventually, I received the confirmation that I had not been selected for the internship. The overall experience was useful because the interviews weren't simply about producing the final code. The interviewers focused heavily on how I approached unfamiliar problems, whether I could identify flaws in my initial solution, and how well I could communicate my reasoning. The biggest takeaway for me was that knowing DSA concepts is only one part of interview preparation. Being able to recognize the appropriate pattern quickly, explain the approach clearly, handle follow-up questions, and implement the solution accurately under time pressure makes a significant difference.
