Detailed experience

Role: Backend Software Engineer / Algorithm Engineer (Internship)

College: Not Specified

Interview Date: October 2025 (next week from original post date)

Interview Type: Internship

Result: Not Specified (Candidate received tips, not their own result)

Difficulty: Medium (coding), practical (AI)

Rounds: 1 screening round (45 minutes, Microsoft Teams)

Topics Asked: Coding (LeetCode-style), System Design (API, data model, queues, caching), AI/ML (embeddings, vector search, latency tradeoffs), Behavioral

Experience:

This experience is based on advice given for an upcoming 45-minute interview for a Backend Software Engineer / Algorithm Engineer internship at Tesla.

A recent interview for a similar backend/algo screen at Tesla skewed approximately 60% coding, 30% design, and 10% light AI.

Coding: Involved medium LeetCode-style questions with an emphasis on clean tests and complexity.

Design: A quick design question around an API, data model, queues, and caching.

AI: Practical questions like where embeddings/vector search would sit and latency tradeoffs, rather than mathematical concepts.

Behavioral: Expected to cover ownership and debugging failures.

Tips: Recommended two timed mocks using a coding assistant with prompts from an interview question bank, and a mini story bank for behavioral questions. Advised to narrate constraints first, list test cases, and keep answers under 90 seconds.
